Why/How Paleo

Conventional wisdom kept telling me I was eating a healthly diet, but I was getting fatter.   These are the books that made me realize there was nothing wise about conventional wisdom.

Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health by Gary Taubes.  This book was my tipping point.  This is when I understood why I was getting fatter and what I could do about it.  Here is 640 pages of clarity.  This is a big read and may not be for everyone, but if you want to know in detail why the standard American diet is making us fat and sick this is the book to read.  Also, check out Gary’s Blog.

Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It by Gary Taubes.  Here’s the easier to digest version of “Good Calories, Bad Calories.”  This is great, straight forward information.  The title says it all, it lays out why we are getting fatter.  Then it explains what to do about it (go on a paleo style diet).

The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson.  Gary Taubes convinced me to stop eating a standard America Diet, Mark Sisson gave me the road map to a strong healthy body.  He lays it all out in a simple no nonsense approach.  He tells you what to eat, how to exercise and answers all the questions you could think of when changing your diet.   Be sure to visit his website Mark’s Daily Apple.

The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet by Robb Wolf.  It never hurts to hear the message from another perspective and Robb Wolf delivers the paleo diet in a humorous way.  The book could not make the paleo diet any more simple.  His message is simple get sleep, eat paleo, exercise and enjoy great health.  Visit his website and be sure to listen to his weekly podcast.

The New Evolution Diet: What Our Paleolithic Ancestors Can Teach Us about Weight Loss, Fitness, and Aging by Art De Vany.  Art could be called the grandfather of the paleo movement.  He explains how he came to the conclusion that this is the best diet for humans.  In addition, he explains how he uses infrequent (but intense) exercise for big results.  I don’t totally get why he limits fat consumption, but it clearly works for him.  He is in absolutely amazing shape for being 72 years-old.
